A Thousand Suns (2010) Warner Bros. Best Tracks: When They Come for Me, Waiting for the End, The Catalyst Worst Track: Wisdom, Justice and Love (because listing the 18-second Empty Spaces feels like a cop-out) Remembered as 'the pretentious Linkin Park album', A Thousand Suns sees the group attempting to be taken seriously as Real Artists, and the results are an incredibly mixed bag indeed.

Though there are several memorable songs on the record (the drum-driven rap When They Come for Me is a particular delight), the band so often shoots for profound but ends up coming off cloying and overly sentimental. They should be praised for their ambitious attempt at trying something different, but this one divided the fanbase with damn good reason: it's only a half-successful reinvention.

Linkin Park's second album 'Meteora' was released 15 years ago today (March 25). But is it their best album? But is it their best album? Rock Sound staffer Jack Rogers is adament.
There could be examples for why every album is their best. Hybrid Theory was by far their most successful album.
There is not a single weak track on the album. They had years before to hone and perfect those songs. Mike and Chester complimented each other well, and Mikes lyrics were on point.
Meteora proved they weren't a one hit wonder. It was essentially a second hybrid theory, with a little different sound. Sophomore album is a big one, pressure wise. Meteora, like Hybrid Theory, was a strong front to back album. There were hints of experimentation, Breaking the Habit comes to mind, and they had something to prove.
Minutes to Midnight was Linkin Park all grown up. Ditching that nu metal vibe, at the perfect time. The first album to be classified explicit, and showed the world they could make music that wasn't made for radio. They really changed with different lyrics, moving away from the me you talk of the first two albums and even went political. A Thousand Suns was one step further. An album on itunes that could be bought as one coherent song. More experimental, more electronic, even further away from their initial roots.
I think Mike had the worst rapping lyrics of his career on this album, and it's the first album with songs I actively don't like. I have a lot of respect for this album though, watching the making of video showed Mike went HAM working on the album. Living Things is different. I think they had the least amount of pressure making this album than any previous album. They proved they could perfect their initial sound, and also that they could be successful away from it. It was folk inspired, also electronic, and they used everything they've learned along the way.
I'll contradict what said and say that I think their best album is Minutes to Midnight. First album to not follow a formula.
Best Linkin Park Album
They took a hiatus for a little bit from touring, while Mike was in Fort Minor. They demoed over 100 songs, it had all types of sounds. From the epic The Little Things Give You Away, to that incredibly heavy Given Up. Mike rocked his raps in Hands Held High and Bleed it Out, and sung for the first time in In Between. I think it was the best because it was their first real leap into a different style of music.
A Thousands Suns: This one divided a lot of people, but I really respected that the band dared to go in this direction and believe it is their best work. I think the consensus is the niche LP fans that wanted something different from the band liked it, the Hybrid Theory fans were mixed, and the casual LP 'What I've Done/Transformers' fans hated it. Meteora/Hybrid Theory: No denying they nailed the formula down for these 2 albums. Very juvenile lyrics listening to it now, but my god, it's still damn catchy. Minutes to Midnight: Early experimentation with less rapping from Mike.
I liked most of the album, especially The Little Things Give you Away. At this point, I think the whole numetal thing was getting played out like how EDM is now, so they tried to do an alternative rock album to keep themselves from drowning with the genre (smart move). Living Things: Absolutely awful! A real shit sandwich. Aside from Lost in the Echo, the rest of the album sounded like a bunch of B-sides they threw together. Next Album: Guilty All the Same sounds promising and it's what I've wanted to hear from them years ago during the MtM era.
Very QWERTY-ish. Rob's drumming is better, Brad's solos are better. The only thing I want to hear from them that they've never done, is hear some real damn basslines from Phoenix! I think that is the one missing texture that they've never played around with in their songs.
